The questions behind the details

Interior Decisions, Clarified

Short answers to help you make a useful next move. For structural or regulated work, the next move should be a conversation with a qualified local professional.

Does a Nordic-inspired interior have to be white?

No. Warm mineral colours, darker timber and restrained earthy accents can work well. Coherence comes from the relationship between light, texture and use, not from a single paint colour. Our material guide explains how to compare undertones.

Where should I begin with a room that feels uncomfortable?

Identify one recurring problem, such as glare, a blocked route or poor reading light. Test a reversible change before replacing large pieces or planning construction. Observe the result over several ordinary days.

How many light sources does a living room need?

There is no universal number. Provide suitable task lighting, comfortable surrounding light and any desired emphasis, with controls that suit how you use the room. See our lighting sequence for a practical starting point.

Will smaller furniture make a small room feel larger?

Not necessarily. A few well-proportioned pieces can work better than many undersized ones. Test furniture with chairs pulled out, drawers open and normal routes in use. Plan around the people in your household, not only the footprint on paper.

Can I mix different timber tones?

Yes. Compare undertones and grain intensity in the actual room. Repeating a compatible tone can create continuity without requiring every timber surface to match. An existing floor is a useful starting reference.

Are natural materials always easier to maintain?

No. Linen may crease, stone may stain or etch, and timber finishes vary in their resistance to water. Choose materials according to their specific care requirements and your household. Request product-specific cleaning instructions.

Will more glass always bring better light?

No. Orientation, shading and the depth of the existing plan influence the result. Additional glazing can introduce glare, overheating or reduced privacy. Read about purposeful glass spaces before treating more glazing as the answer.

Does a garden pavilion need permission?

It depends on local rules, the property, size, location and use. Check with the relevant local authority and qualified advisers rather than assuming a detached or small structure is exempt. Building compliance and planning permission may be separate requirements.

When does a styling project become professional renovation work?

Seek qualified advice for altered walls, fixed wiring, drainage, structural loading, waterproofing and glazed additions. A visual idea does not establish technical safety or compliance. Moving a chair and removing a wall belong to very different kinds of project.

Can I send plans through the contact tool?

No. The contact tool prepares a plain-text message locally for copying or downloading. It does not upload files or send a message, and it is not a professional design assessment service. Please avoid sensitive personal or property-security information.
